PEEK has excellent properties such as high temperature resistance, excellent mechanical properties, good self-lubricating properties, chemical corrosion resistance, flame retardancy, peel resistance, radiation resistance, stable insulation, hydrolysis resistance, and easy processing. It can manufacture and process various mechanical components, such as automotive gears, oil screens, shift starting discs, aircraft engine components, automatic washing machine wheels, medical equipment components, etc., and is applied in fields such as aerospace, automotive manufacturing, electronics and electrical, medical and food processing.

 

Aerospace is the earliest application field developed by PEEK. The particularity of the aviation industry requires lightweight materials with flexible processing, low processing costs, and resistance to harsh environments. PEEK has many performance advantages in this field, such as high temperature resistance, excellent mechanical processing, radiation resistance, low smoke, flame retardant, non-toxic, corrosion resistance, hydrolysis resistance, etc. Therefore, PEEK can replace aluminum and other metal materials to manufacture various aircraft components, reducing weight by up to 70% compared to metals and improving fuel efficiency.

Can PEEK plastic be processed?

Yes, PEEK (polyether ether ketone) plastic can be processed. PEEK is a high-performance engineering plastic with excellent mechanical properties, chemical stability, and high temperature resistance. The following are common processing methods for PEEK plastics:

CNC machining: PEEK can use CNC milling machines, lathes, and drilling machines for cutting. CNC machining can be used to manufacture shapes, holes, and simulations of PEEK parts.

 

Hot pressing molding: PEEK can be processed by hot pressing molding (hot pressing molding) method. This method involves heating PEEK particles or vacuum tubes to vacuum temperature, then placing them into a mold for pressure forming, ultimately forming the desired shape.

 

Injection molding: PEEK can also produce complex plastic parts through injection molding. This method involves heating PEEK particles and injecting them into the mold under high pressure, followed by cooling and solidification, ultimately obtaining the required parts.

Ion beam processing: Ion beam processing is a precision machining method that can be used for micro machining of PEEK. It uses high-speed ion beams to write, cut, or carve PEEK surfaces to achieve precise shapes and patterns.

 

What are the drawbacks of PEEK materials?

Although PEEK is an excellent high-performance engineering plastic, it also has some drawbacks, including the following aspects:

High cost: PEEK is a relatively expensive plastic and belongs to the high price range among common plastics. The cost of raw materials and processing complexity result in higher prices for PEEK products.

 

Processing difficulties: Due to the high melting point and hardness of PEEK, its heat treatment and mechanical processing are relatively difficult during the processing. For traditional plastic processing methods such as cutting and injection molding, higher temperatures, higher cutting speeds, and more wear-resistant tools may be required.

 

Limitation on specific gravity increase: PEEK has a similar specific gravity of about 1.3 g/cm3, which is relatively heavy compared to some lightweight plastics. This may affect its use in certain applications, especially for components or products that require low weight.

Sensitive to certain chemicals: Although PEEK has good chemical resistance, it may be more sensitive to specific chemicals such as concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated hydrofluoric acid. In a specific work environment, it is necessary to evaluate its chemical resistance.
