In many cases, molds can be damaged during the casting process. This is a foreseeable step in sand casting, where the castings formed by sand are decomposed to expose the finished product. New sand casting molds are easy to make and sand is often recycled to manufacture new molds.
Metal casting may also involve the use of wax in a process called investment casting. The manufacturer first establishes a wax model of the final product. Before the wax is heated and removed, it is covered by a ceramic layer, which shapes a mold with patterns shaped by the wax inside.
Both of these technologies have their own advantages. For example, sand casting is a simpler process and is easy to replicate. Investment casting requires more preparation work, but may perform better in manufacturing complex parts. Sand casting usually has higher costs; And investment casting requires more labor to change the established design. Manufacturers must determine the best usage process based on their budget and labor constraints, as well as the quality of the parts they want.
